Overview of Novarine and THCv

Novarine is a cannabis strain providing a functionally unique cannabinoid, THCv, in a high percentage of total weight, matching or slightly exceeding the percentage of regular THC, and manifesting vastly different physiological effects.

Of equal importance, Curaleaf/Grassroots, with a presence in 23 states, has ramped up production of Novarine, turning it from a niche strain for home growers supported by online enterprises providing the seeds, to one available as regulated by each state, meeting every standard there is a regulation for, with a professionally grown, processed and inspected Whole Flower now within reach of a large and geographically diverse population.

The information presented here is for people considering incorporating this strain into new or ongoing treatment regimens.

It cannot be expressed too strongly: extensive human trials are necessary to verify the research findings in every area in which THCv shows promise. Some of the trials may not work out, but more knowledge will be accrued no matter the outcome...but it also can't be stressed strongly enough that none of the current, and persuasive, findings have tested Whole Flower, full-spectrum, complete entourage options. So the research offers only clues as to what may prove helpful, and that is why the medical profession won't be prescribing whole flower treatments for anything. Which is why it is exciting to have personal access to Novarine from an established cannabis producer. It is up to the individual to understand what is to be consumed, and only act when an informed decision can be made. But now the individual can score his stash and trust that the genetics of the chosen strain were flourishing at the time the grow was harvested.

An important effort to collect enough THCv-user impressions into one database to help inform discussions of clinical interventions and provide guidelines for expectations, is being carried out by Jade Nectar in California. There are several links provided near the end of this post to the activities of this company. The Crowdsourcing Initiative can be reached can be accessed here.

This cautionary note from Dr. Peter Grinspoon should inform anyone's decision to try cannabinoids as an intervention in disease:

The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control. While marijuana isn’t strong enough for severe pain (for example, post-surgical pain or a broken bone), it is quite effective for the chronic pain that plagues millions of Americans, especially as they age. Part of its allure is that it is clearly safer than opiates (it is impossible to overdose on and far less addictive) and it can take the place of NSAIDs such as Advil or Aleve, if people can’t take them due to problems with their kidneys or ulcers or GERD.

This is solid science supporting THCv as a promising subject for future research, and backing up the wide-ranging anecdotal evidence garnered due to its capacity for appetite suppression that earned the nickname The Diet Weed.

Novarine
is the first widely available commercial cannabis strain to provide THCv [or any other cannabinoid than CBD] with a percentage weight equal to or greater than the THC provided. Most users have never encountered such an entourage, anchored as it is by a unique cannabinoid capable of far-ranging physiological effects, with enough THC to play a role in pain management {and provide what is known in the trade as a Nice Buzz, suitable for daytime consumption, when sharp focus and getting things done are important}, as well as providing minor cannabinoids and terpenes in the range of 3 percent of total weight.

This site is devoted solely to understanding Novarine and THCv, including the endocannabinoid system on which it acts, the receptor sites that facilitate physiological activity, and the ways in which this molecule, and the cannabis strain that provides it, can be utilized in a self-care program.

Because cannabinoids interact with the body's [internal] endocannabinoid system, replacing the naturally synthesized Anandamide and Arachidonic acid at receptor sites, they can potentially affect a profoundly important regulatory system.

"...[cannabinoids] pharmacologically modulate CB1, CB2, GRP55, GRP119 and TRPV1 receptor activities, involving activities such as memory, sleep, mood, appetite and motor regulation, pain sensation, neuroinflammation, neurogenesis and apoptosis."

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36556483

Keep that list in mind when checking out the research links. This one rogue THC-varin with a 3-carbon tail has access to all those systems and affects many of them.

                    *******************************************************

THCv is MEDICINE. Please understand the nature of the intervention you are considering and don't think you're going to score an 1/8th, roll one and hit the stratosphere because the mandated label clearly states the Total THC is near 25%. That is true but misleading at the same time, because it includes THCv in the tally with THC, instead of separately listing the percentage weight of each.

Here's the thing: THCv on its own won't get you high, except at exaggerated doses. In fact, it will most likely diminish the high through its other, non-psychotropic [bodily], effects. Novarine does provide a nice buzz, but that is only one consideration, and hardly the most important one, in deciding to utilize it as a the primary source of THCv for appetite suppression and arthritis relief -- which the blogger can state unequivocally and anecdotally is well within the purview of this strain.

Consuming too much early in the process starts the Pilgrim on the path to habituation, in which more product is required to achieve the effects of the early doses. Microdosing holds the solution to this dilemma.

                *******************************************************

Microdosing is not a new idea, and is one to consider before embarking on a treatment regime featuring daily Novarine/THCv.

A small pipe with a metal screen allows for precision dosing tailored to the individual's experience. Since the vaporization temperature of THCv is 428 F, even the best flower vapes might not handle it well. 215 C = 419F. The blogger, by purest chance, owns the Flower Vape by Pax, and performed a short test. Initially, Novarine was heated to maximum temperature of the internal burn box, 419 degrees F., and one toke was taken. [There is an updated Pax 3 flower vape that has a burst mode that covers the temperature considerations. The person who told me of this said that a bong gave a better impression of Novarine than the vape.]

The resulting effects noticeably lacked the sensation of appetite suppression, and didn't provide much of a high, either. Reasoning that, if the THCv hadn't been vaporized, it should still be intact in the remaining flower in the burn box, everything was emptied into the sieve and sifted until there was enough for one measured dose. That provided most of the normal sensation of appetite suppression, but lacked the deep muscular awareness that the intact entourage provides. These results are consistent with the idea that the presence of the entourage [all the cannabinoids and terpenes that make up a strain's unique profile] influences the effect specific molecules achieve.

As of the beginning of 2023, there are vape cartridges available in New York City providing full spectrum Novarine:

In case you get nostalgic for the good old days of vaping:

This cannabinoid in such quantity is something new for most cannabis consumers, even those already enrolled in state-certified Medical Marijuana programs, and those with years of experience, certified or not. And it is certainly new to a citizenry that could possibly benefit from one or more of its known characteristics, yet knows little to nothing -- and often believes outright disinformation -- about getting well with cannabis.

If you decide to take Novarine for a spin, consider giving your feedback to Jade Nectar through its Crowdsourcing initiative. Yes, this molecule has an enthusiastic following, especially in areas where the seeds of some of Jade Nectar's amazing strains are distributed for free through several state licensed dispensaries.

This interests the blogger:

THCP is a another rogue THC-varin, this one with a 7-carbon tail. It is produced along with THCv and up to 20 other named varieties of THC that decorate their ring structures in various ways but, in the end, are pharmacologically similar to THC.

This other varin turns out to be a super-THC, many times more potent than THC, with a high lasting far longer. As you might imagine, breeders and geneticists worldwide have taken an active interest in both studying and increasing the yields of this molecule. There are also varins among the lesser cannabinoids, including CBDv, that have an array of distinct effects.

THCv is always characterized as short acting, because it is assumed that all anyone is really interested in is getting high. But from the viewpoint of one who desires symptomatic relief, THCv creates long-lasting effects. The blogger fully expects a dose to last 3-4 hours, exemplifying one of the differences between Medical Marijuana and recreational use. Another is the value of avoiding habituation.

Strains expressing THCv in significant amounts:

Jack Herer [1939-2010] was an international cannabis personality, known as the Emperor of Hemp
, who had a strain crafted by Dutch genetic masters in his honor. This strain has TCHv in small but still significant amounts, and has become a part of many hybrid mixes that provide higher percentages of TCHv. Any strain currently available that has Jack in its name is descended from this original strain, and may have THCv.
